Your garage door will have one of two types of garage door tension spring: torsion or side mounted spring. Because of the force behind a torsion spring, it is recommended that it is adjusted by a professional only. If your garage door tension spring is side mounted, you should have no problem adjusting it yourself.

Before You Start

You will need to open your garage door and make sure that it stays open while you are adjusting the tension spring. Open the garage door as far as it will go and clamp a c-clamp beneath the bottom roller. This will stop the door from closing. You will then need to remove any safety cables that are attached.

Adjusting the Garage Door Tension Spring

The springs will either be looped through holes in the track or attached with a special clip and S-hook. If the door closes too quickly, you will need to tighten the springs by tightening the cable through the loop or putting the S-hook in a closer hole. If the door is hard to open and close, loosen the spring by giving the rope some slack or placing the S-hook in a different hole to low for more slack.

Whether your garage door is broken and needs to be replaced or you are just looking to upgrade to something that better suits your house, there are a few things you need to consider in order to find that perfect fit.

The first step in finding a new garage door is to pick a material. A steel garage door is low-maintenance in any climate. Wood doors offer a classy more decorative look but they require more frequent upkeep. Composite doors, which are made of 100% recycled wood are a newer option that combines the strength of steel doors and the decorative appeal of wood doors without the upkeep. Many garage doors are offered in standard sized but before you buy one, make sure that it will fit in your garage. If there isn’t a standard fit for your home, you may need to find a manufacturer that offers custom fit sizes.

The next step is to find a design and color that compliments your house. There is an almost infinite number of combinations out there so it is important to take your time and find the one you like. The prices between doors will change depending on the features that you want in your door. Variables that will cause price differences are size, style, and installation. Examples of these variables are what material you choose for your door and decorative elements such as windows and paneling. Once you have an idea of what you are looking for, it is time to find a dealer.

Search online for garage door dealers near you. Get a good idea of the pricing that each one of them offers and try to find some reviews on their work. Make sure to choose a dealer who is insured, who carries general liability insurance, and has a good reputation within the community.

These steps should make your garage door purchase relatively easy and help you to find the perfect garage door for your home. Never try to install a garage door by yourself. The process itself can be dangerous and if it is not done correctly, it can cause a potential accident in the future. Only let a trained professional install your garage door.

Many homes have garage doors but unfortunately few people ever think about the upkeep and precautions that must be taken in order to ensure their family’s safety when using these doors. The garage door is the largest moving object in the average home and for this reason it can be dangerous.

Many people, especially children, don’t realize how dangerous garage doors can be. There are a few practices that should be avoided if you want to prevent injuries. The first is to never walk through the door while it is moving. Many people are too impatient to wait for the door to come to a complete stop before they walk under it and even make a game of it by trying to run through it while it is closing. For your own safety, wait for the door to completely open before you walk through it. If you are closing the garage, walk through it and then close it behind you.

If you have an automatic garage door opener make sure that the remote or the push-button on the wall is out of reach of children. It is difficult for children to comprehend the dangers of a garage door so it is better for a responsible adult to be in control of the button that opens and closes it. Make an effort to explain to your children that they should stay away from the door as well as any joints, hinges, or springs that can also cause injury when the door is in motion.

Garage door maintenance and tests will reduce the risk of accidents. One test is the door balance test. For the door balance test, you should operate the door by hand, so if you have a garage door opener you will have to release it. Start with the door closed and lift it to about 3-4 feet. The door should open smoothly and it should stay open at this height. If it doesn’t you should contact a qualified service person.

Many new garage door openers will have reversal features, if yours does not, you should upgrade to a newer model that does. A reversal test is recommended every month in order to ensure that it is working. Before conducting a reversal test, you should first conduct a door balance test, if the door is balanced, then proceed to the reversal test. To start the reversal test, fully open the door and place a 1.5” thick piece of wood on the floor in the center of the door. Close the garage with your remote or push button and make sure that the door goes back up when it hits the wood. If It doesn’t, it should be checked and repaired.

The force setting test is also used to test the reversal function of the garage door opener. It is conducted by closing your garage door with the remote or push button and holding the bottom of the door as it closes. If the door doesn’t reverse then it should be fixed.

Keep the moving pieces of the door lubricated except for plastic parts to ensure that the door will move up and down smoothly. Never remove or loosen the screws on the bottom brackets of the door because they are under high tension and should only be handled by professionals. Conducting these tests and maintenance monthly and following the precautions should give you confidence that your garage door is safe for use.

June indicates different things for different people. For some it means summer is in full swing, for others it means that the school year is over, but anyone with a garage knows that June is “Garage Door Safety” month. While it is important to practice garage door safety all year long, take some time this June to make sure that your garage door is working properly. Make sure that the people who regularly use it know how dangerous it can be and the ways that they can avoid those dangers.

One thing that you should do this June, and every June, is to contact a professional for a garage door check up. This is the only way to know for sure that your garage door is in top condition and that your family is safe.

Many people do not know that monthly maintenance and testing is an important way to keep your garage door working smoothly. This June, start the habit of checking and testing a few things every month. Check your garage door for loose brackets, these brackets are under a great deal of tension and could be harmful if they are removed. Make sure to keep track of the age of your garage springs, change them every few years because they too can become to tightly wound and break. Check for any frayed or worn cables, if a cable were to break the door could slam shut damaging the door and anyone walking beneath it.

An important test to conduct every month, and especially this month, is the Reversal Test. New Garage door openers have a reversal mechanism that forces the door to go back up if it hits something before it closes shut. If you have an older model that does not have this function, we highly recommend that you upgrade. When conducting the reversal test, make sure that the door is completely open and in place. Then place a roll of paper towels in the center of the doorway and hit the button that closes the garage door. As it lowers onto the towels and makes contact it should reverse and open back up, if it doesn’t then you should contact a professional to come and fix the problem.

Children do not understand the dangers associated with the open and closing garage doors. If you have not taught your children how to properly use the garage and the dangers that they should be aware of, take the time this month to talk to them about it. If you have already explained these things to your children, this month is a great time to remind them.

The best way to keep children safe is to keep the controls away from them. Make sure that they can not get their hands on any portable remotes and don’t put any wall buttons within their reach. It is recommended that these buttons are placed at least five feet high so that young kids cant reach them.

If you follow these instructions that you and your family should be safe and your garage door and garage door opener can be as convenient as they are meant to be. Click that button and let your kids out into this beautiful June weather! Happy “Garage Door Safety” Month!

Did you get a new garage door installed in 2010? If yes then you might be able to claim $1,500 in energy tax credits if you installed a qualifying garage door! A tax credit is more valuable than a tax deduction because it is a dollar for dollar reduction in your tax liability while a deduction is just a reduction in your taxable income.

This tax credit is equal to the sum 30% of all qualified energy saving improvements combined ($1,500 max) made to your home in 2010. The credit applies to the product only and not the labor or installation and you must claim the credit for the year that the project was completed.
In order to claim the credit for your garage door you must meet the stipulations above and complete the IRS Form 5695 and submit it with your 2010 taxes by April 18, 2011. This means get it done now if you want to save some money! You should save your receipts and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement for your records but you will not need to submit a copy with your return. This statement certifies that the product qualifies for the tax credit.

If you bought a garage door do not miss out on this opportunity to save money! Get the paperwork started now!
