Garage Door Styles

garage door styles

We created this Garage Door Styles Guide. We install garage doors based out of Fairfield, New Jersey, and see houses, and garages, of all shapes and sizes, from newer homes and older homes. Today, I want to go over our garage door styles guide, and about how I try to help you as a customer figure out exactly what style of garage door might work best for you and your home. I like to break them down into three main styles. First, being the traditional next would be your carriage house, followed by modern, these are the newer styles coming out for more modern homes.

First, really being traditional, probably still our most popular. The traditional raised panel door you typically see with four squares across on a single door, or now they do a long panel with two squares across, which is one of my favorites. These will look great on almost any home.

Next would be your carriage house. Carriage house doors we will typically pair with decorative handles and strap hinges to make it look like a pair of swing-out doors. These have gotten very popular. You can get them with the cross bucs, and have that farmhouse vibe that a lot of people enjoy and also your shaker-type doors, you know, the smaller recessed panels, as well as Craftsman-style doors in the overlay doors. Those are going to fall under the heading of carriage doors, at least as I see it.

And lastly would be your modern style doors. Those would be your full view glass doors with the aluminum frames, or something that is really popular right now is a flush door that has some mosaic-style windows where the windows don’t just go across the top, they go down the sides. You can put them in the middle. You can put them wherever you want to make your own modern design. Also, I like for a modern home a standard flush door, a nice smooth door with no raised panels for a clean look.

Between those three, most of my customers will fall into one of those categories. Once we pick a style category then we can refine it a little bit more. I plan on doing some more videos on each specific category and really showing you the different options that you can put on your home.  Exploring Garage Door Styles

When it comes to home improvement and curb appeal, one often overlooked aspect is the garage door. While it may seem like a minor detail, the style of your garage door can significantly impact the overall aesthetics of your home. In this guide, we’ll take a closer look at different garage door styles, from classic to contemporary, to help you make an informed choice that complements your home’s architecture and boosts its visual appeal.

 Carriage House Garage Doors

For many different types of homes carriage style garage doors are the most common kind. These generally mirror the appearance of old-fashioned carraige house entryway doors, but can work well with modern dwellings too. While most traditional carriage house doors worked with the center-hinged mechanism and opened up manually, nowadays there are various options for the contemporary carriage house door designs that come with automated opening, and still give an authentic vintage look of swinging doors.

 Raised Panel Garage Doors

The raised panel is one of the most popular types of garage doors. In today’s modern era, raised-panel garage doors have become the norm — people usually picture this particular style when they imagine garage door styles. The classic raised panel door had ‘floating’ panels, which were set in a rail-and-stile frame, while on most of the current variants — commonly of fiberglass — the panels are single pieces of material formed to imitate raised panel look.

With the raised panel becoming such a sought after design, there is an option for every type of material, whether they be made out of wood, fiberglass, aluminum or even steel and can offer a wide range of garage door enhancements.

Contemporary Garage Doors

But there’s nothing quite as critical as this when matching residential house styles with garage door designs for modern homes. A contemporary house design with smooth edges has to incorporate such doors into their garages as well. Some popular choices are doors with tinted, frosted, or clear glass panels contained within painted aluminium frames.

Another thing that appears to be resurging in more retro-meets-new house design is the slab door, wherein the door folds out from the rest of the wall instead of opening as foldable .horizontal panels which hinge at the bottom and fold upward as Slab doors need to be opened with a specialized hydraulic door opener, just as with the carriage doors.

Traditional Garage Doors

The leading manufacturers of garage doors provide their customers the freedom in choosing from an extraordinary variety of styles which fit almost all popular, well-recognized American Architectural Styles (including Cape, Colonial, Victorian, Ranch, Craftsman) as well as some Most everything can be custom ordered in assorted finishes and hues in order to coordinate with your home décor. . The most prevalent option will likely be those of the modern roll-down variety — horizontally pivoting sections with vertical seams that hinge open and fold upward along overhead tracks.
